Badaun: Two succumb to spurious liquor


Badaun UP: Spurious liquor claimed two more lives while one person lost his eyesight and several others fell critically ill after consuming spurious liquor in Moosajhag area of Badaun, police said on Friday.

The seriously ill people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sankalp Sharma said that the prospective candidates for the gram pradhan’s post had distributed liquor to woo the voters in the village in view of the panchayat elections and Holi in Tiglapur village of Moosajhag area of the district.

Sanjay Singh and Prem Das died some time after consuming the liquor while Amar Singh lost his eyesight. Several others fell critically ill after drinking the alcohol. All of them are undergoing treatment in the district hospital.

District Magistrate Deepa Ranjan reached the spot after receiving information and took stock of the situation.

Two prospective candidates for the gram pradhan’s post and one other person have been arrested in connection with the case and they have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC.

The liquor which was distributed could not be recovered but some empty alcohol pouches have been found which are locally made and are being inspected.

The bodies were sent for autopsy.

It may be mentioned that incidents of consumption of spurious liquor have been reported recently from Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Ayodhya, Farrukhabad, Kanpur Dehat and other districts in which over two dozen people have died while several others are undergoing treatment.
